ICT & Art
This series was especially created for the ICT&Art CONNECT event in Brussels April 2012, hosted by the European Commission.
Paintings
These paintings were influenced by innovative ICT projects and aim to bring into the spotlight some important relations between the human and ICT. They also explore the relationships between art & ICT.
’Face Code’
The painting 'Face Code' is a simple idea where 1s and 0s that make up binary codes are hidden in a human face. The emotion on a face can be conveyed with the subtlest detail, by lifting the corner of the mouth, slightly moving the eyebrows, tilting corners of the eyes. The numbers are clustered around the features of the face that most convey expression- areas around the eyes and mouth. By concealing small numbers that in a sequence form a code, I am implying the possibility of coding and de-coding of the expression.
Moreover, the plaid shirt of the sitter integrates 2 QR codes, one that directs the viewer to the artist’s website and the other to the list FP7 ICT projects on the European Commission website.
‘Allegory of Art’ and ‘Allegory of ICT’
In ‘Allegory of ICT’ a shirtless man playfully handles a floating transparent brain and sports a halo of neurons above his head. This imagined character is not the stereotypical ICT professional that one may imagine. He is outdoors in the sunshine and there is not a computer screen in sight. Both the brain and neurons represent the power of the human mind that ICT innovations are either inspired by or are made to accommodate for. The brain glows blue and green not dissimilar to the appearance of our planet.
The ‘Allegory of Art’ mirrors the halo in ‘Allegory of ICT’ with its graffiti wing, together they imply an angelic collaboration. The brain of ICT is answered with a stencilled heart with wires sticking out of it. Other stencilled elements depict alternative interpretations of the symbols for the arts. Unlike the ICT man this artist is indoors, contemplative, in a crowded jumble of images.
