This mural was made with the help of the local community, entirely out of coastal litter! Commissioned by Viridor for their Visitor and Education Centre at the Energy Recovery Facility in Dunbar, it aims to inspire people to view waste as a valuable resource as well as informing them of how our environment is affected by it. This ambitious project also aims to highlight the scale of the problem by putting all the rubbish in its full variety on display. The focus is on the East Lothian coast and the background shows the Barns Ness Lighthouse.
Together with Viridor's Community Benefits Officer Sue Anderson, I worked with 200 S1 pupils of Dunbar Grammar School, 130 P5 pupils of Dunbar Primary School, and with people of all ages as part of Environmental Open Day at Dunbar Harbour, the RNLI Lifeboat Fete and with the Dunbar Against Litter Group, making upcycled artworks. The school pupils picked up litter around their school, the S1s also sorted and washed it all themselves, and then made local coastal animals out of it. I completed the artwork at my studio by creating a background of the various habitats which the animals inhabit.
