Commissioned as part of the Rediscovering the Antonine Wall project managed by five local authorities and Historic Environment Scotland.
Named by the local community via a public naming and vote campaign, Silvanus was a Roman god protector of forests, fields and cattle and three altars mentioning this name have been found along the Antonine Wall, one of them at nearby Bar Hill. Archaeological discoveries along the line of the Antonine Wall determined that the construction of the wall involved the erection of carved stone ‘Distance Slabs’, which celebrated the achievements of the Roman Legions responsible for each section of the wall. The sculpture is installed alongside one of five replica Roman Distance Stones. They can be found across the length of the Antonine Wall, celebrating the Roman heritage and raising awareness of the Antonine Wall World Heritage site.
